The Sacred Island of Patmos, located in the northeastern Aegean Sea between the islands of Ikaria and Leros, captivates visitors with its unique beauty at first glance. Our first stop, the picturesque harbor and the impressive Monastery of St. John standing above it, create the island’s striking silhouette.
After leaving Skala Harbor, the journey continues to the charming village of Chora. Here, the Monastery of St. John rises amidst whitewashed houses, standing out with its dark grandeur.
The monastery is surrounded by high, thick walls and has a total of eight chapels. The courtyard is paved with pebbles and decorated with arches. Through these arches, one can see the delicate frescoes adorning the chapel entrance.
In the museum, you will find a collection of jeweled chalices, crowns, and crosses. Additionally, old manuscripts dating back to 1073, icons, and religious paintings are on display, including an original work by the famous painter El Greco. Unfortunately, some valuable artifacts from the monastery’s library, which is not open to the public, can also be seen in the museum.
The next stop is the 17th-century monastery built around the cave where St. John lived for two years (95-97 AD) while writing the Apocalypse. In this cave, you can see the stone that is said to have been used as his pillow.
After this unforgettable experience, you will take a short bus ride back to the harbor.
